Saarinen Award & AAG Travel Grants



Conference Travel Awards and 2013 Saarinen Student Paper Competition

The Environmental Perception and Behavioral Geography Specialty Group announces its specialty group travel awards and the 2013 Saarinen Student Paper Competition. Students with accepted abstracts for the 2013 AAG meeting are invited to apply. Please note the deadline to submit an abstracts for the AAG Meeting in Los Angeles is Oct. 24, 2012

Travel grants. Undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to apply for travel grants of $100 to support travel to Los Angeles for the 2013 meeting.  To apply, students should submit a copy of their accepted abstract and complete the online application form.    Preference will be given to students competing in the Saarinen paper competition and student members of the EPBG specialty group, although any student presenting relevant work is welcome to apply. The deadline to apply is March 1, 2013. Attendance at the EPBG meeting is required to receive the travel award.

Saarinen Student Paper Competition. The EPBG Specialty Group will award one $250 prize for the best student paper, illustrated paper, or poster (graduate or undergraduate) presented in either environmental perception or behavioral geography at the 2013 AAG meeting in Los Angeles, CA. Entrants in the Saarinen Student Paper Competition must submit a maximum 25-page (double-spaced) paper in support of their conference presentation. Shorter papers are welcome.  Papers must be based upon original research done as an undergraduate or graduate student and must be written entirely by the applicant. All submissions will be judged on written clarity, methodological soundness, contribution to the field of EPBG, and their presentation at the meeting. The Academic Directors of the EPBG specialty group will judge all entries. The deadline for the full paper for the Saarinen Student Paper Competition is March 1, 2013. To apply for the Saarinen Student Paper Competition, fill out an application form here.  Email a single pdf file containing (1) your accepted AAG abstract and presentation session, (2) a letter from your research adviser verifying your status as a student and confirming that you are the author of the manuscript submitted and (3) a copy of manuscript, including figures and references to bcutts@illinois.edu with “2013 Saarinen Paper Competition” in the subject line.

The deadline for applicants is March 1, 2013.  The winners will be announced at the Environmental Perception and Behavioral Geography Specialty Group business meeting during the 2013 AAG meeting. Attendance at the EPBG meeting is required to receive the travel award.  Attendance is not required to receive the Saarinen Student Paper Competition award.
